Welcome back, we hope you crushed your 2023 goals and are ready to steamroll through 2024!

Early-stage founders often grapple with focus. At this juncture, your primary focus should be on hitting validation (paid customers/users) and achieving PMF (repetitive success) ASAP.

To expedite this journey, ditch the guesswork. It’s time to measure and analyze your product’s performance. By identifying what works and what doesn’t, you can optimize efforts, saving crucial time and resources.
Establishing product analytics early isn’t a luxury; it’s a startup necessity. The data you collect from users, combined with active listening, is your ticket to cutting through the noise, monetizing your product, and reaching PMF faster.
Today we will be sharing a step-by-step guide on how you can set up your product analytics in just 3 days.

Day 1 → Mapping Custom Events

Before setting up anything, you first need to understand what is it that you want to measure. That means identifying the key features and steps in the user journey that can give you insight into their interaction and perceived value.
For those that don’t have any product analytics setup or are struggling to define the custom events, we recommend using our “event mapping system” (duplicate and use) so you can easily decide which custom events you need to configure and define.
To define each event, consider the following:
  1. Key Features/Actions
    • Map out the main features and actions providing necessary insights
  2. Event Measurement
    • Specify the event name correlating with the feature
  3. Event Triggers
    • We recommend configuring event activation tied to server-side actions
  4. Event Properties
    • Determine additional information fields for comprehensive analysis, including user properties and specific event details.

Day 2 → Choosing Our Product Analytics Tool

After mapping out the events for measurement, the subsequent step is to determine the reports you’ll require, guiding your choice of a platform that aligns with your insight needs.
Several product analytics tools are available, including Heap, Mixpanel, Amplitude, Pendo, Fullstory, and Google Analytics (with more limited capabilities).
For early-stage startups, these tools usually provide flexible options that can help save costs. The ultimate decision hinges on understanding the specific insight reports required and the ease of integration with your product. Choose a platform that seamlessly aligns with your analytics needs and integrates well with your product.

Day 3 → Deploying and Creating Reports

After successfully integrating the analytics tool into your product and starting to receive data, the next step is to configure the reports that will provide essential insights for optimizing your product towards achieving Product-Market Fit (PMF).
Key reports to measure include:
  1. Activation and adoption metrics
  2. Funnels
  3. Retention + Engagement Cohorts
  4. User Flows
  5. Custom KPIs
Combining product analytics with qualitative analytics, such as listening to user feedback, provides a comprehensive view of the critical areas that need improvement for monetizing your product and attaining PMF.
